The song carries on in this vein as the guitar takes its place in the background helping everything run nice and smooth. The second half of the song is dominated by a lush and very 70’s mellotron style keyboard leading us on a wondrous journey before the vocals break back in to take us to the end of the song. Starboard opens with a haunting keyboard that almost has an alien and otherworldly sound to it before John Whyte’s guitar fires in with a great riff that is backed ably by the keyboards. There is a definite early Rush feel to this track, not surprising considering Whyte’s Rush covers background and is emphasised by his Geddy Lee style vocal. In places the song provides an injection of pace compared to the previous two tracks and fairly rattles along, driven hard by the bass and drums, it’s like being transported back to the heydays of 70’s prog rock but with a definite modern edge. The regular keyboard and guitar interplays work fantastically as do the vocal interchanges between Whyte and Rabin.

Once I got over the lack of elephant trumpets or bagpipes, I was treated to a fantastic concept album detailing, to the best of my understanding, the destruction of the Earth and the concurrent escape of an ark of humanity, admittedly, not the happiest of topics. Home Away From Home is a place any lover of Melodic Prog will adore spending time and with it Elephants Of Scotland have produced an album that makes me immensely frustrated that my "end of year" list has already been submitted.

Adam Rabin has another chance to shine again on "Full Power" as his piano leads the way in the beginning of the song to transition to a more atmospheric and lush second half of the song. The interplay between bass, guitar and keys leading into the lush part is wonderful and Rabin's keyboard solo is hauntingly beautiful. Burlington is hardly a bastion of prog rock — at least not in the current century. On their debut record, Home Away From Home, the band draws on the genre’s late 1970s and early ’80s heyday.

The synthy goodness found in this album, then, had me smiling with glee, as I'm a sucker for synth. First of all, I cannot help but make a comment on this Vermont based band's moniker, Elephants of Scotland is a catchy, proggy, hilarious and memorable name for a quartet where 2 members are named McLean and MacDonald, who happen to be the rhythm section! Leader and keyboardist Adam Rabin shows off some appropriate Jewish humor by branding their musical union so humorously!

The result is an updated take that both honors and teases prog conventions and manages to paint outside its royal red lines. As a registered member , you can post rating/reviews (& edit later), comments reviews and submit new albums. It’s a masterful finish, made all the more satisfying by the previous restraint. The band has an interesting method of sharing the vocal leads, as three different members offer their performance here. And last but not least, the crown jewel arrangement on the sublime and surreal "Errol McSquisitor", all conspire to startle the unprepared listener into being vaulted into sheer bliss. I was expecting something tasty but this was a very enjoyable ride, indeed.

Couched as an environmental statement, it’s about as close to straight-faced as the band comes — lyrically speaking, at least. Guitarist John Whyte performed in a 'one-man act that did a lot of Rush songs' prior to playing with the Elephants. "Starboard" was obviously influenced by Rush and Mr. Whyte's work as the song could easily fit on any late seventies Rush album. Whyte also sang the lead on this song, and frankly, he even sounds like Geddy Lee. The interplay of textures between Rabin and Whyte's voices at the end shows a wonderful contrast of styles.

While the remainder of the album cheekily touches on appropriately fantastic subjects ranging from alien invasions to time travel — again, this is prog rock — in terms of sheer musicality, EoS remain dead serious. “Full Power” is something like what might happen if the Nice kidnapped Ben Folds. Nine-minute album centerpiece “Starboard” breathlessly dives into the New Wave-meets-metal end of the prog pool — where it likely encounters Styx swimming with floaties. The title track, clocking in at a comparatively sparse four minutes, is a lean, aggressive cut that practically begs to be the soundtrack to the montage sequence of a great 1980s flick. "Geograph" kicks in, keyboards dominating over an insistent hi-hat shuffle and ringing tom work, guitars merely underpinning the glorious melodies that are already painting pictures and setting scenes. Everything here is busy, working to the max, but still leaving bags of room for the song to breath, while keyboardist Adam Rabin's vocals bring a real storytelling vibe to a crystal clear mix, which Rabin himself provided; he and his band also expertly producing the whole shebang.

I was in the mood for some great neo-prog, and I was certainly not disappointed when I purchased this debut album from Vermont's Elephants of Scotland. I was, to my shame, attracted by the interesting name and the great, spacey artwork . In other words, this album has a certain attraction to it from the start.When I popped it into my player, I was floored by the musical proficiency I experienced. The band has a wonderfully soulful style full of awesome bass lines, catchy guitars, and rip-roaring drum work.

On the lead cut, “Geograph,” Rabin and guitarist John Whyte build a lean, insistent groove on a bed of staccato guitar and fleeting synth arpeggios. Backing this are Dan MacDonald’s propulsive bass and an alternately functional and flashy drum line, courtesy of Ornan McLean, that would make Phil Collins grin. It’s all a setup to the vocal storm that follows, in which Rabin and company exhort the virtue and violence of nature.

One other note, major points for having a song about geology (why yes, I'm glad you asked, I am a geologist). "Geograph" slaps us from the get go with an energetic keyboard metronome giving the rhythm section of bassist Dan MacDonald and drummer Ornan McLean the first spotlight as they set the groove for the song. Leaving the closing, eleven minutes of "Errol McSquisitor" to illustrate that this four piece are as adept at constructing long winding soundscapes, as they are more succinct bouts of memorability. The song, as is the album, is a triumph and once more allows the wonderful coming together of restrained fret work, more insistent keys, stage setting bass, relaxed vocals and intricate rhythmical bursts. Elephants of Scotland should be rightly proud of their debut album, not once would you have said it was a self-produced album, the sound quality and mix are excellent. Taking its cues from traditional progressive rock but injecting it with some originality, Home Away From Home is a worthy addition to the ranks of impressive debut albums and I wait with bated breath for the follow up.

Home Away From Home is the first album by New England based Elephants of Scotland. The first thing I noticed is how great the toms sound on the drum lead in, and, throughout the rest of the album. After a few moments of chunky groove, chaos crashes in by way of the guitars and organs before we get back to the groove. Next up, we get to hear Keyboard player and main vocalist Adam Rabin voice for the first time. John Whyte shines on his first solo of the album, his tone vaguely reminiscent of Chad Taylor of Live.

For there's no doubt that it deserves a rightful place as one of the best albums I've heard all year. They combine classic sounds with new ideas to great effect, and I'm immensely impressed. They have a new album arriving in Spring 2014, so be sure to check it in addition to this album, too. "Errol McSquisitor" is another nice, down-tempo, atmospheric song, most likely the best of the bunch . Dan Bolles is Seven Days' assistant arts editor and also edits What's Good, the annual city guide to Burlington. He has received numerous state, regional and national awards for his coverage of the arts, music, sports and culture.

"Full Power" surges into view next, proving to be one of my favourite tracks of the whole year, the Ozric Tentacles meets Saga vibe of the opening track replaced with something altogether more relaxed. Again the keyboards take command, haunting melody lines once more bouncing off gloriously 80s sounding tom clatters from Ornan McLean. However it is the sheer beauty and unforgettable nature of the keyboard melodies which make this song a triumph and a track which implores you back to hear it again and again. If you're looking for reference points, you can add Rush, King Crimson and Presto Ballet to the Ozrician, Saga mix already alluded to. However fair to suggest this is all scintillating melody driven Prog and be done with it. Bassist Dan MacDonald comes more to the fore in "Starboard", his expansive playing adding more depth to a song not exactly lacking in that direction, the bottom end humming and thrumming as once more keyboards set the scene.

Final track Errol McSquisitor starts out as subdued and atmospheric and, dare I say it, almost pop music like. The keyboards, guitar, drum and bass are all laid bare and down-tempo and the vocal has a dream like quality. The atmosphere is ramped up as the keyboard takes on a glockenspiel like sound and the guitar intensifies taking us into an almost psychedelic direction, moody and ominous. The excellent drums come more into play as the song morphs even further and becomes a cinematic soundscape before one by one, the instruments take a bow and leave the scene leaving us with only an ethereal synthesiser to bring this excellent album to a close. This album has been steeping in my mind for the better part of a year now.

They have a classic rock vibe buried in their style that keeps the music moving along without much pause for noodling or the like. When I come to neo-prog, though, I mainly come for the excellent keyboard work, and Elephants of Scotland do not disappoint in this area. They manage to fuse spacey atmospherics with organ leads and solos to great effect.

Through all my time with Mailbox, I always had a side stash of songs that were too rocking and epic to do without the right live band. This is the debut album by Elephants of Scotland which includes some of those songs and others that were written in collaboration with the guys. Elephants of Scotland's latest album Home Away From Home lays down a lot of familiar elements combined in ways that are fairly conventional but still show skill in composition. Apart from that, there seemed to be an overall lack of energy in the recordings, sort of a stagnant feel throughout. In the end, die hard fans of neo-prog may be satisfied but Home Away From Home may have difficulty reaching a broad range of prog audiences.

Led by vocalist, keyboardist and primary songwriter Adam Rabin, EoS deliver a generally well-crafted suite of material. It’s founded on songwriting structures that are rigid enough to give each song an identifiable framework but pliable enough to allow for flights of improvisational fancy. As prog aficionados know, there’s a fine line between instrumental ingenuity and outright wankery.

Here however the guitars suddenly insist on bursting through for the first time, John Whyte rivalling his keys-mate for domination, and also taking lead vocal duties for this song. The results are the most Rush like sound in evidence here but again it is done extremely well and in a way that gently persuades, rather any attempt to "in your face", or "look at me", most bands insist upon; less often providing so much more. Despite that seemingly bloated run time, the album is actually quite efficient.
